How to Change File Permissions on Windows 7

Have you ever wondered why the user you always logged on to was never able to change a folder or even delete it ? Well, here is a tutorial that tells you why not, and how you can change that.

After you have located the folder you would like to edit, right click the program and click the option that says, "Properties". Once you have clicked properties, a menu like this is going to pop up. The properties menu allows you to play around and change the options of a folder. The general tab allows you to check the location, name, size, and the date created of the folder.  Alternatively, you get the sharing tab, which allows you to decide whether you want to share the folder with the people in the same network or not.

Go to the Security tab. Now the main tab we're going to be be talking about is the Security tab, which will allow us to change the permissions of each user concerning the folder. After clicking on the Security tab, you will see, in the first box, a list of users that are registered in your computer. Clicking on each user will show you the permissions set for each user pertinent to the folder. In the examples in this article we're going to use the "Administrator" user. This account always exists, and has control over everything, although in your computer it might be named something else. The options set for that user will be listed in this box.

After you have viewed the permissions that are already set, you can now click on the Advanced Button that is right below the "Permissions for Authenticated Users"
Once you have clicked Advanced, a box like this should appear, the "Permission Entries" box, which shows all the permissions that are set for the users. Now, after you have spotted the user whose permissions you wish to change, click "Change Permissions".

Click on the user you would like to edit, and then click the option that says "Cha

nge Permissions" which is right below the box.

Once that is clicked, you are going to get the same box pop up, but this time, you can actually edit the options. you do that by clicking the "Administrators" user again, and this time, you are going to click the "Edit" option.

Next Step, which is almost the end of our tutorial, is actually to change the options. Here you can completely change everything in a folder. If you scroll down the box, you will see many options and boxes. On the left are written the actions, and on the right a box to either "Allow" or "Deny" the user permission perform those actions.
  • For extra help, this article will use the option "Delete" to show you what is meant; the "Administrators" user is already allowed to "Delete" the folder if the user desired, now lets change that to "Deny" so the user will NOT be able to delete the folder from that user.  And now, our Tutorial is over.
